Flagman

“Our Banner in the Sky” by Frederic Edwin Church, 1861
Flagman
For Zeqir Berisha (1942-2018), on Independence Day.

Upon a corner, in the square,

The Flagman stands alone

holding high the Stars and Stripes

of his adopted home.

The traffic daily rushes by

but most pay him no mind:

a strange man on the corner

while they're running way behind.

But Flagman knows the horrors

of a country plagued by war

and hardship communism brings:

this was his life before.

So, though few really understood,

he stood each day with pride.

And Flagman waved Our Flag until

he laid down and he died.

So, keep your kneeling athletes,

and keep d.c.'s ruling class,

keep hollywood's celebrities,

keep scolding “woke” en-masse,

keep propaganda pressmen,

because this much is clear:

a hundred of those fools ain't worth

just one Flagman Zeqir.
